In Search of…

Hmmm, okay, as the stories about this have spread across the Internet like a rash since Blake Bell posted about it, I might as well confirm that the Jonathan Ross show I was working on back in Feb/March (and which I have continued to help with where I can, as needed) is entitled “In Search of Steve Ditko”. It’s a profile of the less-famous half of the original Spider-Man creative team, to be aired on BBC4 sometime in the near future.

My March 1st entry was related to this, of course.

Otherwise, I don’t want to discuss too many details, or nuts and bolts, except to say, I hope it’ll be a really cool show, and it’s nice to have been able to contribute.

Okay, So What Do I Do?

Speaking of all this design stuff… actually, I do have a serious problem. A problem that would make it hard for me to even do a new logo for this site, for instance.

The logo at the top of the page (at the time of writing!) was done in Photoshop 4.0 on my old computer. It was nothing fancy; two gradient fills stitched together, Black Chancery font stretched vertically a little bit, standard emboss filter. That’s as fancy as my logos get, anyway.

Then: new computer, not running Win98 but WinXP. It doesn’t like Photoshop 4.0. It hangs/exits very frequently on load and save of images. I’m sure this is due to the age of the software. So now I’m stuck with a thing called PhotoStudio (I think it came with my old scanner), which works fine but is frankly crap!

Definitely Maybe Moving

Well, yes, we might have a new home! The flat’s location is okay. In fact, in terms of public transport, it’s excellent. The estate is a bit, uh, mediocre. The flat itself is just average, and needs to be completely redecorated. But it could be a lot worse.

It was brand new on the market, so we were the first to view it. Mom decided to say we were interested. We got a call late this afternoon from the estate agents to tell us the seller was agreeable, so it’s ours if we want it.

As always, for me, mixed feelings. Somewhere just a wee bit nicer would make me feel better, really. But, the truth is, nothing else vaguely acceptable and within our budget might turn up for another six months. Our financial situation is bad. The car’s MOT and tax is up early next week, and we can’t afford to renew it, so until we move and have more spare cash, the car’s out of action.

Boring Geeky Stuff

Like the new logo? I’m still working on the site here and there. I haven’t used graphical logos for some time, because some browsers (IE 5 & 6, at least) have issues with locally cached copies of transparent gifs. I wanted to use a jpeg instead. Hey, they look better, anyway.

What I didn’t know, until a few days ago, is that you can convert HTML colour codes into RGB ones using Windows Calculator (scientific mode), meaning you can enter the exact RGB codes into just about any decent paint prog and have a perfect match with your background, or any other colours coded into your site. No need for transparency! (Unless you’re using a textured background, anyway.)
