Back from the Dead

Well, as of yesterday, I’m back on a decent computer. I picked up a 120gb HD (rather than 160) from ebay, where it seems I go for almost everything these days. Quick delivery, brand new, well packaged, and within five minutes I had it fitted and Windows setup running.

I guess it’ll take a few days to get everything on here how I want it. But it’s nice to not be seeing the machine sitting around like an expensive ornament. And at least I learned how to fit a hard drive out of the experience. I’m sure that’ll come in handy on an almost daily basis. 🙂

It’s been a weird few weeks with that and having a dog around. The dog’s future here, it has to be said, is at present under consideration. Let’s just say he has a boisterous nature and a discipline problem… and mom, not being in the best of health, is finding it very difficult to cope (and with her angina, too much stress is a real no-no).

Looking for Stephen King?

Current reading = old reading I never quite made. Mom bought me Stephen King’s Bag of Bones in hardcover back in Christmas ’98. I’m not sure why I never read the thing. I dug it out a few nights ago and when mom saw it she remembered she’d bought it from Asda—where it had been proudly displayed on a stand that proclaimed it King’s Latest (which, at the time, it was).

I’m just over halfway through, and I can say that I’d deprived myself! It’s a really great book. Not very fast-moving, really, but rich in character with lots of intriguing detail. For another opinion, read Kevin Quigley’s review. I’m giving it a big thumb’s-up (of course, if the ending disappoints me, I might go back on this).

Uninspired

I have been doing a bit more writing, but it’s in small bursts. I revised a story I wrote about a year ago, and I have four other new items in various stages of not being complete. I think I’d feel a lot more inspired if I felt better generally… but at least what I have written seems to be less crippled with infantile mannerisms than it used to be. I might even get a bit of self-belief back eventually.

Hogwarts Movie

Yeah, I did see the Harry Potter (and the Philosopher’s Stone) movie a couple of weeks ago. I really liked the books, in spite of my inclination to expect they would suck. Well, the movie was just okay… most of the cast was great, with Robbie Coltrane shining in particular, but… somehow, the pacing and direction seemed kinda flat. To me, anyway. I imagine it’d be quite confusing to people who’ve not read the books, due to the condensing of a lot of stuff. It was okay; just not great.

Harry Potter 2001

I still need to see Lord of the Rings.
