Othello (1952)

I had planned to talk about some DVD purchases, so why not. It’s been a couple of weeks since I bought this one, and I’m sure mentioning it will have most people stifling yawns, but that’s just tough! It has to rate a mention: Orson Welles’ 1952 adaptation of Othello.

Othello Poster 1952

Out of the ‘official’ Welles directorial canon (all twelve of ’em), the ones I’d never seen were Chimes at Midnight, scattered clips aside, Immortal Story, and Othello. The latter’s the most ironic, as it’s my second-favourite Shakespeare play. (My favourite is Hamlet, unoriginally enough.)

It’s Curtains

At least the flat’s taking shape. I got curtains in my bedroom yesterday. A room that catches all the daylight sun (through full-width windows) can be tremendously unpleasant without curtains. Since the computer’s in here, that problem needed fixing badly.

I picked up a battery charger and a pack of rechargeable AAA batteries. I have the impression a digicam without rechargeable batteries might be an incredible pain. Not that I’m apt to use it incessantly, but it seemed a good idea.

Ho-Hum

Although I had a few postings planned, raging apathy has kept me from bothering this week. I am still intensely bored with the Internet (and therefore finding it hard to be bothered writing this stuff)… which is rather ironic, as we’ve ordered a new computer.

Speaking of new, the new carpet was fitted on Wednesday. It makes the place look a lot better. The new fridge and cooker arrive tomorrow, so the microwave-only spell will be over at last.

Not a Starman

I made another Bowie purchase. HMV has a lot of Bowie on sale at the moment, so what the hell. 1997’s Earthling is that rare Bowie oddity: an album I’ve never heard before. Well, now I have.

Before I get on to that: yes, I did really enjoy the new Bowie album, Reality. It seems to me it’s a notch or two better than Heathen, which I liked a lot, but felt was a little flaky around the edges. I appreciated the way most of it had a much harder, colder edge, which recalled Scary Monsters at times. No, I don’t think it’s that good; but it’s closer than most of Bowie’s recent work.

Not a Starman

I need a few more listens to decide for sure how well I rate it. So far, very positive.

Live Long and Prospero

The puns get worse^. Richard Whiteley’s gonna sue any day now.

Okay, the first of a few postings on recent stuff I’ve read/seen, to catch up a bit. Last week, I finally got hold of a copy of Garen Ewing’s comic-style adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Thanks, Garen! You can visit his Web site for details on this and much more.

London Stuff

My London trip last Friday went well. It was nice to have a break from all this house move stuff. The new place is still a mess and I’m starting to find it rather depressing. I know it’ll be sorted out eventually, but meanwhile, life is damned uncomfortable.

Anyway, London: I only got one half-decent snap. This is the Golden Jubilee Bridge, which Paul and I crossed to reach the South Bank and the National Film Theatre.
