Doctor Four
Well, here’s a third effort in my Doctor Who pic series.
Well, here’s a third effort in my Doctor Who pic series.
I’ve been encouraged to try more DW caricatures, per previous post. So here’s Pertwee.
Well, it’s fair to say last year’s Capaldi debut series of Doctor Who got me thinking about the show quite a bit. And he’s a great Doctor. Shame about the scripts, for the most part. The reminder to watch lots of Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker shows was a positive, anyhow.
I’ve been thinking about experimenting with caricature styles, so, for a quickie (took about an hour, I guess), I had a go at Capaldi.
Thus ends another year!

Well, I’ve left the blog unattended for aeons again. Just wanted to sneak in before this year is over and done with.
Hasn’t been a very good year, apart from the Bowie stuff. Chaotic, frustrating, lacking in any of the progress or affirmation I’m looking for.
And then, on November 25th, the author Joel Lane, who’d become a very good friend of mine in recent times, passed away suddenly. His delayed funeral, which I attended, was on December 23rd.

The January 2012 Lodge meeting—Joel is at the back, partially obscured. The others are Steve Green, me and Theresa Derwin.

I sometimes forget, but it’s nice to remember Jack on his birthday.
I am aghast to realise it was ten years ago (almost) that I tried to make a Bowie Top Ten list.
Thought I’d try similar, with the same reckless abandon, and see what comes out.
Oh, okay. A pic of Bowie first (a la last time).
Nice scarf, Dave. And you do rock the odd gray streak in that awesomely luscious hair. 😉
Here goes the new Top Ten…

Or so it says on an old badge I still have. Which I used to wear a lot. Being absent from the blog so much this year means no Bowie Talk about the new album, The Next Day. (Buy it from Amazon.) Yeah, I liked it; yeah, I’ve had my ups-and-downs with it. In the end I made peace with it fully—I actually love some of it intensely.
See, I thought he was gone for good. And I was more or less okay with that. It might seem odd but the whole thing was very emotional for me. I had to go through a wide spectrum of feelings. On the other side, I’m really happy the new album exists. The world is a better place with DB in it.
And hey, he’s still a fine-looking man at 66, ain’t he?
One of the things demanding an amount of my time recently has been trying to move. This activity has actually become an enduring theme in my life in recent years—and I still haven’t managed it. I don’t live in Birmingham per se. I live in a small town about 15 miles North. I’ve spent a large chunk of my life in this town variously. I’ve escaped a couple of times and somehow been sucked back in. As much as I hate this place (the small town), I’m sure it’s at least a bit unfair to aim that hatred at Birmingham as such.
I’ve even been looking for a place in Brum. But I have a few technical hurdles, let’s say, and being a dog owner happens to be one of them. Poor old Fred.
Just slightly longer than a couple of days since my last posting, but hey, after leaving it for six months, this is quite punctual.
I’ve been busy since moving site to new server, tweaking and revising. Special emphasis on the Portfolio (go look)—the visual sections are now slideshows. And much more up-to-date. It’s easier to maintain & update for me, too. So I’m pretty happy about that.
Well, anyhow—one of the things I’ve been doing is working on a book! Those of you, if there are any, who’ve been visiting for aeons and have an obsessively long memory might recall me talking about Hard Luck City before. You can buy it NOW on Amazon UK and Amazon US.

HARD LUCK CITY cover. Pencils by Gene Colan. Colours by Randy Sargent.
