Best of Bowie

Well, not really. I was thinking about the patently impossible task (suggested by David [dead link]) of making a Bowie Top Ten (see my general Favourite Sounds list here). Can’t be done! But I’ll grab ten songs anyway and refuse to stand by them tomorrow, okay?

But first…

Best of Bowie

Older and craggier, but still a God! Sorry, just wanted to include a photo. Right, here’s my carelessly compiled list…

01. “Heroes” (1977)
02. Changes (1971)
03. Ziggy Stardust (1972)
04. We Are the Dead (1974)
05. Scary Monsters (1980)
06. Oh! You Pretty Things (1971)
07. Space Oddity (1969)
08. Outside (1995)
09. Moonage Daydream (1972)
10. Let’s Dance (1983)

Yeah, I think Let’s Dance is a great pop song! Hey, I was a kid at the time. What this list proves is the aforementioned impossibility, for me at least… I just scanned the albums and grabbed ten titles. They’re all good, but only if you ignore all the stuff I’m selling short!

  1. I’d put Rebel, Rebel third after Ziggy Stardust and Changes. Ashes to Ashes, probably for similar reasons you put Let’s Dance: I’d just moved from the FM radio wilderness of Eastern Ontario to go to university in the Toronto broadcast area, and it was guaranteed to be playing any time you turned on the radio (I was susceptible to that kind of marketing at the time).

  2. Ashes to Ashes almost made the list. I went for Scary Monsters instead… Bowie’s last ‘classic’ album had to be represented, though.

Let’s Dance is one of those defining musical moments of 1983, for me. It actually got to number one in the UK during a brief lull between Culture Club singles. 🙂 I was in school and had no idea I would ever be looking back like this 20 damn years later. I also remember 1983 for a little book called Silver Star, by some guy whose name I forget offhand…

  3. Wow! Was at the NEC Arena last night to see Bowie live! Fantastic gig, load of oldies played, great atmosphere. Better than when I’ve seen him live before. Even played one of my faves of the Lodger album.
