Last night, I watched the new BBC series Strange. There was a pilot for this 18 months or so back, but I only saw half of it. Simple premise: John Strange, defrocked priest, and his pals, investigate and put a stop to evil supernatural stuff, particularly of a demonic variety. Yep, it is as silly as it sounds… but it works pretty well.
One of the bigger draws, for me, is the character of Canon Black. What does this enigmatic man of the cloth really know? Whose side is he really on? He certainly knows something—more than he lets on. Black is played with typical brilliance by the almost peerless Ian Richardson. Ian is worth watching in just about anything. The fact that this show is also generally rather good makes it a definite Saturday night highlight.
Wow, sorry I missed this one. It’s a series? I’ll have to keep an eye on CBC and PBS (could take years but hopefully they pick it up). I’m still saving up for the “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” DVD if there is one (the video’s PAL).
Maybe I could tape an episode or three for you if you can view PAL stuff. It clashes with CSI: Miami, so mom would be recording one or the other in any case. LMK via e-mail.
And yet again, something that I’ll wait patiently until it hits BBC America…
