Yesterday reminded me that our dog, Fred, would’ve been ten years old a few days ago. He died in July 2002, following a drawn-out period of illness I prefer to forget. Mom was dead against having another dog back then, but feelings change over time, and lately we’ve been watching the local classifieds regularly.
Fred was a West Highland Terrier, and that’s the only breed mom will consider. The dog we had some 15 years earlier was a Jack Russell, but mom was never awfully keen. I agree with her: the Westie is a wonderful breed, scoring big on the Cute-O-Meter, with buckets of surprising intelligence to boot. I bought mom a big, cuddly Westie toy for Mother’s Day, and ever since she’s been talking to it like she did with Fred! I think we’re both missing having the real thing around. 🙂
Anyway, yesterday we spotted an ad. Mom called up. If any of the litter is left tonight, we get to have one Saturday. Fingers crossed.
