God is Dead

I must admit, all the hooey over The Passion of the Christ is quite amusing. I might consider myself a spiritual person—if someone could offer me a coherent definition of the term—but I’m basically an atheist, and feel wholly detached from all this heated baloney.

One argument seems to be that the film might provoke anti-semitism. I’m sad people might take it seriously enough to come away which such a ridiculous feeling. I thought Jesus’ crucifixion was a pre-ordaned inevitability, reducing all involved to mere pawns… but do I even care?

The project has been hyped as the most accurate depiction of Jesus’ final day. For extra authenticity, it’s filmed in the correct language(s). Hm. Am I the only one to find this quite laughable and intolerably pretentious? The written material available in the New Testament and sundry other scraps of documentary evidence (I use the word evidence loosely) gives at best a sparse and sometimes contradictory account of the events. This film cannot be taken as anything but a work of fiction based on fragments of alleged truth.

So, ultimately, what’s new? As far as I can see, nothing. Same story. More violence. Better production. I think I’d rather see Duke Wayne drawling about the Son of God, personally…

  1. Sorry that you claim to be an Atheist,
But Jesus was a real person whose life and death
was recorded in histrocal texts, not only in the Holy Bible but also recorded by some roman scholars of the time. Resurection? well thats for you to decide, but I would encourage you to research your facts before you dismiss the possibility of it being True.
