Films we’ve watched recently:
Wrong Turn… verdict: okay. I think I appreciated it being fairly WYSIWG, no hidden twists or ‘clever’ variations. There were some moments of genuine tension and suspense. Not an original bone in its body, and if you’ve seen Hills Have Eyes et al, why bother? Along similar(ish) lines, Cabin Fever seems to have had good reviews, so I’ll probably check it out whenever.
Sin Eater… I think this one was going for the clever variation factor, and probably attempting something awfully deep and artistic. But it did so in a really plodding manner. I needed to feel more of a build-up. I needed to give a damn. On the whole, I didn’t. Occasionally interesting, but not nearly often enough.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen… silly fun. I’m told it has none of the depth of the comic book; I doubt the comic could have less! It was an all right way of killing two hours, though. Connery is Connery. The plot almost made sense. The rubber Hyde suit was a bit rubbish (and the CGI version, being a replica of it, wasn’t much better). David Hemmings didn’t have much to do in one of his last screen roles, but it’s nice he got main titles billing for two minutes of work!
On a decidedly more classic note, I picked up the original King Kong DVD from Music Zone for a fiver. It’s my sentimental fave film (my ‘intellectual’ fave being Touch of Evil). Brilliant buy. If you don’t have it, get it! I mean, wow, this is the uncut version—see Kong stamp and chomp more gratuitously, not to mention sniff his fingers after fondling Fay! This is the hard stuff, folks. 🙂
A new posting tomorrow, probably!
