I Don’t Need No Steenkin’ Hot Weather

Yesterday was Shopping Day™, and I went into Birmingham. The weather continues to displease me. First thing in the morning, it’s chilly; by noon, it’s blisteringly hot; by late afternoon, a cold wind has been added to the mix. I don’t know, maybe this inconsistency is what Global Warming is about. All I know for sure is, it’s incredibly annoying. Particularly the blisteringly hot bit… but then, I’m no Summer Fan.

Anyhow, I bought a video: Touch of Evil. Oh no! Another Orson Welles film! (I bought The Third Man last month.) Yeah, well, I’m a fan, and since I’m not buying books at the moment—I’m still slogging through The Stand at present, with about 260 pages to go—I’m spending what little spare cash I have elsewhere. As with The Third Man, it’s been at least a decade since I saw this one. We’ll probably watch it tonight, so maybe I’ll comment further tonight or tomorrow.

I said I was still slogging through The Stand—that’s not entirely true. I’ve just read it very slowly. Between rebuilding this site and there actually, for once, being quite a lot of neat stuff on television, I’ve simply not been reading as much. I hope to write a bit about the good TV stuff in a later entry (or entries), as I think there are a number of items worth mentioning. I’m afraid none of them have anything to do with Buffy, however. The mystique of that stuff has entirely eluded me.

(If I were being honest, I’d say I think Buffy is crap—but I don’t want to risk having a dozen ardent BuffyHeads at my door with burning torches, so I’ll keep my mouth shut…)

  1. The Third Man: I meant to thank you for the review. It and Touch of Evil I could never see often enough, unlike (for some reason) Citizen Kane.

  2. Well well well – someone else says Buffy is crap. So it’s not *only* me. The previous impression I got said that all non-Buffy fans must be killed

  3. Mike, I think The Third Man and Touch of Evil are both probably more satisfying films than Kane… I guess I see the latter more in terms of historical importance, plus it being as awesome a debut as anyone could ask for. Maybe it attempts too much to be entirely satisfying or successful. The other two work from a much smaller canvas and therefore manage to say everything they need to say.
