The war seems to be almost over. I’m quite shocked at the swiftness with which Baghdad has seemingly been (largely) secured after the significant resistance encountered in smaller areas (i.e. Basra). But I’m thankful for this. It will hopefully save a lot of lives, and that is always the most important factor.
Saddam being overthrown is obviously a good thing. Most of the Iraqis are going to be happy about it. But I still cannot believe in the idea that the end justifies the means. Lots of people have died—more than a thousand civilians alone.
The enduring image of this war, for me, will not be Saddam’s statue being toppled. It will be the orphaned child who has lost his arms. Just one person amongst many, but the image was so powerful and moving. I’d like to know if Bush & Blair will be paying for this boy to have state-of-the-art prostheses fitted. I’d like to know if they’ll be paying for all the other damage incurred. I won’t hold my breath for an answer.
