For a while, we’d been letting Tikki go on ‘dates’ with other Westies. Finally, early in May this year she met a lad named Ollie and there was a successful pairing. We just wanted Tikki to have the experience of motherhood the one time, and intended to keep at least two of the litter so she’d have a couple of companions.
Everything was going perfectly, it seemed, and a scan showed no issues, but at the start of July it appeared she was going into the early stages of labour, and then after a day it just stalled. We were told this was normal and could definitely happen as routine. I was concerned, but I’m no expert so what do I know? After a week and still no signs of anything happening, I was very concerned. On July 7th we had another scan and again it appeared to be fine, but the following afternoon Tikki was producing dark discharge and the situation became an emergency.
To keep it short, she was having a miscarriage and underwent an emergency C-section—the pups were dead. And for a while, needless to say, she wasn’t feeling very well at all.
I blame myself. It was a fool idea. I have a lot of fool ideas. I thought it might just be a nice, life-affirming experience. How wrong can you possibly be? So, anyhow, for a couple of months, at least, life was upside-down and stressful. Whatever plans I had to post on here went out of the window… only now am I starting to think about that again.
Tikki is fine now. So that’s something. And to prove it, here’s a couple of adorable pics from last month, including a fun photo we did for Halloween!
Oh, and speaking of fool ideas, there is another dog in the house now. I’ll go into that shortly……
The road to Hell is, so it’s said, paved with good intentions.
Glad to hear your li’l doggie is now doing well.
