Moonlight Shadows Cover (What If)

If you’ve been tuning in regularly, you’ll have seen the written extracts from Moonlight Shadows, my unfinished Lon Chaney Jr book (here and here)… recently, by way of producing some new work samples—because I really need to upgrade my portfolio soon—I did a new version of the cover for the book. (No, I’m not thinking about finishing the book off! But never say never…)

Moonlight Shadows Cover (What If)

I am using the same photo as on my previous cover dummyies (a publicity still for The Defiant Ones), but this time I made a composite image to include some spooky branches and a moon in the background, then I colourised the whole thing. What do you think?

Speaking of, have been doing some new Photoshopping, design & photo work for a couple of new, horror-related books that are to see print soon. I’ll post more about that shortly.

  1. It’s a striking image. I like the branches across the full moon and the way that Chaney’s hair on his forehead is almost an extension of the branches above

  2. Great shot. This is the sort of picture that would could study for hours to perfect lighting and shading A/La Wood and others. The complexity of gradation in the forehead and the play of moonlight of Lon’s hair is something one could obsess over for hours with feathered line or pointillist dots.
